Electrode paste is used as a consumable conductive material for the production of calcium carbide and ferroalloy in a submerged electric furnace. The electrode paste is a self-baking electrode calcined by a submerged electric furnace heat source. The so-called self-baking electrode is to fill the metal shell with electrode paste. Under the action of the high temperature of the furnace and the heat generated when the current passes through the electrode, the electrode paste is baked to make it a conductive electrode. The allowable working current density of self-baking electrodes made of electrode paste is low, generally 3~6A/cm². Compared with the carbon electrode, the raw material requirement is not high, the manufacturing process is simple, and the production cost is low. Generally, the electrode paste used in small calcium carbide furnaces or ferroalloy furnaces can be metallurgical coke or pitch coke, and anthracite and metallurgical coke should be used for large and medium-sized electric furnaces. Adding broken graphite or graphitized metallurgical coke is beneficial to improve the thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity of the electrode paste. The amount of binder must be appropriate. If the amount is too much, the sintering speed of the electrode paste will not keep up with the consumption needs, resulting in soft fracture, and after sintering, the porosity is high, the strength is low, and it is easy to hard fracture. If the amount is too small, the sintering speed is too fast, and the strength after firing is low, which will also cause hard fracture. my country’s metallurgical industry’s standards for the quality of electrode pastes were formulated in the 1990s. The electrode pastes are divided into sealed pastes, standard electrode pastes and chemical electrode pastes. The relevant quality indicators are shown in Table 1-3.

In 2006, the CGM carbon electrode paste production line was put into operation. The production of electrode paste requires heat to soften and shape the raw materials. The general electrode paste factory needs a gas generator in this process, and in time, it also needs more expensive natural gas after coal is changed to gas. However, because our calcined coke production line can release a lot of spare heat, and this heat is just used by the electrode paste production line. Therefore, compared to more general electrode paste manufacturers, we have already saved a lot of costs in terms of heat generation.
